Life was hard in the "Smyrna" colony. Each member of every household worked long hours under very harsh conditions.
Leisure activities were limited to their own homes for a very few hours in the evening.
These Mediterranean colonists were a very social people, accustomed to living in clustered groups. TheTurnbull design for the colony called for duplex dwellings spaced 210 feet apart for a distance of about eight miles, making social life with their kinsmen and neighbors virtually impossible.
                            A COLONIAL FUNERAL
Father Pedro Camps prays for the soul of a
departed colonist, one of over seven hundred deaths during
the short nine year existence of the Turnbull colony.
Life in the fledgling settlement was difficult, limited
food, disease, insects and harsh working conditions bordering
on slavery, all contributed to an early grave.
